What is PAT testing?

PAT testing is very simple: the ‘PAT’ stands for ‘portable appliance testing’. This means electrical testing for smaller appliances and devices, items that are portable. It’s particularly important for appliances that are a bit older or have been used extensively, to make sure they still work properly and safely.

PAT testing can sometimes be carried out visually by an experienced technician, or can be done with electrical testing. Either way, you need a qualified specialist to carry this out, as broken or malfunctioning electrical equipment can be dangerous.

Do I need a PAT testing service?

Whether you require PAT testing can depend on a few different factors. For instance, if you have some particularly old appliances in your house, it would be best to arrange a test. In addition, appliances that get a lot of heavy use should be tested to make sure they are holding up.

If you suspect any of your appliances of not being up to scratch in terms of how they are functioning, PAT testing can help you find out if you’re right! If you think you might need PAT testing, just give us a call and we can discuss your situation.

How frequently should I test appliances?

How often you need to test your electrical appliances can vary. A microwave that gets used virtually every day, or power tools used used on active sites, should be tested fairly often. Of course, some appliances spend most of their time at the back of your cupboard. These won’t need to be tested nearly as much!

What kinds of appliances can be PAT tested?

Although the ‘portable’ in PAT testing may give the impression that only items that are easy to carry around can be tested, it is actually any technically movable appliance that can be connected to a fixed electrical system. For instance, as well as microwaves, vacuum cleaners and kettles, washing machines and ovens can be PAT tested too.

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?

PAT testing is not actually required by law, but it is a legal necessity to make sure electrical appliances are safe. There is no legal guidance on how often to test appliances, or who should do so, but it is always best to seek the advice of a qualified professional.
